CANCER SONGS
In September 2006 while doing concurrent chemo and radiotherapy, I felt inspired to write a re-purposed parody of the Bee Gee's classic Staying Alive. I sent the lyrics to the EC group (an email list for fellow EC fighters and their care givers) and received an overwhelming response from members encouraging me to think about recording the song.
Excited about this idea, I immediately began making plans to make a CD available of the song. I even asked my surgeon (a rock drummer in his spare time) if he would play drums on the recording and, to my surprise, he said he'd love to. An acquaintance of mine got to hear of the project and offered his expertise as a recording engineer and producer.
To cut a long story short, the project fell flat on it's face before it ever got off the ground. I became too sick from the chemo/radiation and it turned out that the technical expertise so kindly offered wasn't realistic. After a few months the enthusiasm simply died.
But almost a year later, I got the bug again to write another few cancer songs, this time specific to EC. And the opportunity to record these songs at a friends studio in Ireland, and encouragement and some brow beating from my wife Rachael, was enough to make the project finally happen!
I recorded four songs, including Stayin' Alive (though sadly without my drumming surgeon), and they can be downloaded and listened to using the links below.
